Family therapy is defined as any case where 2 or more people will be present for the majority of the sessions. Family therapy focuses on changing the relational patterns and dynamics that happen between people.
I have a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, and am trained and experienced in providing therapy for families with members of all ages.
I specifically love to work with families with teenagers. In 2019, I participated in the creation of an adolecent residential treatment center and I created and implemented all of their family therapy programming. From this experience I gained a specialized skill set for working with families of teens. And I like to say "I speak teenager!"
It's important in family therapy to decide who will be participating. We'll do this in the consultation call or in the first session, and this can look different for each case. In general, if we are doing family therapy, I like to have all family memebers present for each session, except in specific circumstances. What's most important though is that all participants have an understanding of how family therapy will work, who will be present, and what will be discussed. This is to keep the therapy safe feeling safe and transparent for everyone. Sometimes, based on the situation, I may suggest having parent-only sessions first and then having the minor(s) join us. Sometimes I may suggest having everyone all together from the start. We will clearly decide this all at the outset of treatment.
Ashley's office for in person sessions - plenty of places for family members to sit, and there are additional chairs that can be brought in if needed as well!
